Teacher Huei Huei was a godsend for our son Elliot! Before we met her, he was getting help from another centre but we were not seeing much progress. I cannot thank Huei Huei enough for the incredible support and guidance she has provided to my sons, Isaac and Asher. When Asher first started working with her in Primary 1, he was struggling with reading. Amazingly, within just two sessions, he was able to read a simple storybook! This early success encouraged and motivated him to keep going, and both of my boys have since developed tremendously under her care.

Early intervention through the Orton-Gillingham approach has certainly given Marcus the confidence and techniques to decipher words and ultimately to read. Even though he may not always get it right, we are heartened that he tries with the techniques that he has learned.

Apart from reading and writing, we have seen how the Orton-Gillingham approach also encourages a holistic manner to learning involving visual, phonological and reinforcement. This has also helped in developing Marcus' working memory.

What sets Huei Huei apart is her holistic approach to address my daughter’s learning needs. She does not just target my child’s writing/spelling issues due to her dyslexia, but also provides insight and feedback regarding her challenges with attentional issues (ADHD), emotional needs, academic performance (in other subjects), extra curricular pursuits, as well as tips for me to communicate with my daughter’s school teachers. Beyond this, she reframes my perspective to seek out my child’s strengths and gifts as opposed to focusing on the “disability”. I believe children can tell if someone cares for them genuinely. We discovered Ian was dyslexic 2 months before he entered Primary One. At the time, he could not even recite the entire set of the alphabet, and was having confidence issues with learning despite having a strong sense of curiosity. His confidence grew gradually under Teacher Huei Huei’s guidance and he has grown to love books, which was counter-intuitive for a dyslexic child. Teacher Huei Huei is an extremely patient therapist and stands wholeheartedly in the shoes of the child. She provides a perspective that a struggling child is unable to articulate and works hand-in-hand with parents to progress through the challenges. Two years later, Ian is reading independently. He’s growing into a more confident and empowered child who is proud of his other strengths, and learns to be patient to work on his weaknesses because he understands everyone is a work-in-progress. That’s the magic of Teacher Huei Huei’s guidance and we are truly blessed to be able to partner her in Ian’s learning journey.
